County Beacon Newsletter #18: Are You Ready For a Disaster?

This Sunday marks the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, which destroyed so many communities in Western North Carolina.

The hardest-hit areas lost power for weeks and were without water for 53 days. Folks there are still rebuilding, and survivors share stories of how, especially in the immediate aftermath, they had only each other to rely on, especially in remote areas.

Especially in North Carolina, disaster can come without warning. Whether it’s the power turning off for a few hours in extreme heat or several days in the wake of a hurricane, preparation is key.

This week we’re talking about how all of us can prepare - by stocking up on essentials, organizing critical documents, and knowing who is responsible in your community for disaster response. So that when the unexpected happens, we are ready to take care of each other.

Now is a great time to check to make sure you have an emergency plan in place. Check out our mini-guide below and let us know what other resources we should include in our emergency guide for Franklin and Granville counties!

County Beacon is working on a comprehensive disaster preparedness guide that will live on our website, and we want to hear from you: what information do you want to know about how your county or town is prepared to respond to emergencies? What questions do you have about how best to prepare for the unexpected? Let us know by emailing countybeacon@beaconmedianc.org or by commenting on our Facebook page.
