Know a Franklin County Teen Who Loves Agriculture? A $1,000 Scholarship Is Up for Grabs
If you are a Franklin County teenager who spends most of your free time raising livestock, preparing for competitions and learning the world of agriculture, there is a $1,000 opportunity just for you.
The Senator James D. Speed Achievement Scholarship, funded through an endowment in the NC State Ag Foundation, is now accepting applications from Junior Beef Exhibitors between the ages of 14 and 18 who participate in the Junior Market Steer and/or Junior Beef Heifer competition.
Applications are due September 15.
More Than Winning in the Show Ring
The scholarship is in honor of Senator James D. Speed, who served for 32 years in the North Carolina legislature and Senate and was known for his commitment to agricultural interests.
The Franklin County Scholarship Search Committee is looking for a young person who demonstrates leadership, integrity, good sportsmanship, achievement of goals and advocacy for today's agricultural industry.
The scholarship recipient will be selected and announced at the NC State Fair.

- The deadline to apply is September 15, 2026
- Applications are available through the Franklin County Cooperative Extension website or can be requested by calling 919-496-3344.
- The $1,000 award will be provided during the student's freshman year and paid to the higher education institution the recipient chooses to attend.
